The Regional Rural Future Teachers’ Club gathered for its spring event to celebrate the year’s accomplishments and to think strategically about the road ahead. The event brought together students, teachers, and education leaders to reflect on what the club has built and to identify the next steps for the future.
Leadership and Organizational Support
The event was made possible through the efforts of several dedicated life-long educators and educational entities. Funding for the event was provided through the Illinois State Board of Education’s CTE Education Career Pathway grant. Western Area Career System 265 (WACS), the Regional Office of Education 26 (ROE 26), and the Association of Illinois Rural and Small Schools (AIRSS) are the partners on the grant.
While the partners have all been very helpful in supporting the team of people working directly for the grant, we were lucky enough to have 2 leaders from these organizations with us to speak at this event. David Ardrey, the executive director for AIRSS, was able to share some words of wisdom with the students at the event, noting the importance of making an impact in rural schools. John Meixner, the recently retired Regional Superintendent of Schools for ROE 26, told us about his experiences as a life long educator and helped to present awards to the graduating seniors.

Reflecting on Progress and Planning for the Future
Teachers took time during the event to meet separately and reflect on the impact that the CTE Education Career Pathway grant has had on their schools. They discussed what went well throughout the year and identified areas where the club and its programming could grow. The grant team listened to their voices and plans to make some changes based on what was heard.
We also had a thoughtful discussion with the group as a whole about goals moving into next year. The conversation centered on two important areas: goals that members hope to achieve in their local clubs and goals that will shape the Regional Rural Future Teachers’ Club. These discussions helped us understand what matters most to our students and what we can do together to support their success. This feedback is essential as we work to build a club that meets students where they are and supports their aspirations in education.

Honoring Current and Future Teachers
An important moment during the event was when students created a gift for their teachers. This hands-on activity gave students the opportunity to express gratitude and recognition for the educators who have supported their journey throughout this school year. The gift served as a tangible reminder of the connection between students and the adults who guide them.

A highlight of the spring event was recognizing five seniors who have made the commitment to pursue education as their path forward. These students represent the best of what the club has fostered: young people who are thoughtful about their futures and passionate about making a difference through teaching. We celebrate their decision and look forward to seeing the impact they will have in classrooms across rural Illinois.

Looking Forward
As we look toward the next chapter, we are grateful for the energy, commitment, and vision that everyone has brought to the Regional Rural Future Teachers’ Club. The conversations, reflections, and celebrations from this event will shape the work ahead as we continue to support students interested in education. This summer we will be busy planning our events for next school year and working to amplify the impact of the grant. Be on the lookout for the impact we’ll be making next year!
